Positive thinking is not just about those thoughts inside our minds. Much of our lives today are spent communicating with others, this communication occurs through social media for the most part, and the words we use play a huge role in our lives.
This growth in communication, thanks to technological advancements, has made it easier to stay-in-touch with old friends, as well as make new connections. It has also made it easier for us to express our thoughts quickly, with far less attention to detail. A quick note, a short text, or a status update are the words of the world today. Our daily lives are often captured in 140 characters or less. The question is, are we using the right characters to express ourselves?
We put so little thought into our daily interactions through the use of social media today, that negativity can pour out of us without realization. Negative phrases and words such as; I can’t, I won’t, don’t, hate, fail and stupid (just to name a few) flood our posts and impact our lives unknowingly. The worst part is, through this excessive use of social media sites, these negative words are not only affecting us but thousands of other people as well. Re-tweets and shares spread negativity like the plague, and a single cynical thought can quickly go viral affecting everyone in its path.
This may sound extreme, and perhaps it is a bit of an exaggeration, but as I have said a million times; “Negativity Breeds Negativity“.
The words we speak have a huge impact on our emotions, and by means of social media, they have a huge impact on other people’s as well. Words like ‘would’, ‘should’ and ‘could’ are the first indicators of negativity and should be erased from your vocabulary, or reduced in the very least.
Each phrase you speak should resonate positivity and indicate some action in the ‘now.’ Even simple phrases such as ‘Someday I will travel to Europe‘ or ‘I will try to get this project done’ should be used with care.
Positive thinking works best when used in the ‘now’, by focusing on the present and having your thoughts/words reflect an action or accomplishment, you are training yourself to avoid settling for anything less than success.
Rephrase where you can.
“I might take a Yoga class” becomes, “I will take a Yoga class.”
Positive action words inspire positive thinking and often result in a greater likelihood of success. There are obviously times when these phrases can not be avoided, but each time you catch yourself using them consider whether there is another way of phrasing the message you are trying to convey.
- Replace “I can’t” with “I haven’t yet.”
- Replace “If I” with “When I.”
- Replace “I will try” with “I will do.”
- Replace “It’s too hard” with “It’s a challenge.”
- Replace “I don’t know” with “I will find out.
Use your words as motivation and inspiration, to yourself and those around you.
